Un arbre nommé Cèdre - Liban

Le cèdre est un arbre légendaire, considéré comme le bois le plus résistant au monde. Au Liban, le cèdre est devenu à son indépendance l'emblème du pays dès 1943, pour sa résistance. Pour admirer ces arbres géants, il faut traverser le Mont Liban, car il ne pousse qu'à une altitude supérieur à 1.200 mètres. Recouvrant autrefois une plus grande partie du territoire libanais les anciennes forêts de cèdres ont souffert de l’excès d’abattage dû à une exploitation millénaire et font place aujourd’hui à des d’îlots discontinus dans l’étage montagnard. Mais les scientifiques sont inquiets, depuis dix ans, plusieurs cèdres se dessèchent et finissent par mourir debout - victimes d’un insecte, devenu très corrosif, dû au réchauffement climatique. L’association Jouzour Loubnan ("les racines du Liban", en arabe) crée en 2008 a planté plus de 320.000 arbres à travers le pays. Comme à Kfardebian, où elle en a planté plus de 174,950 sur une surface de 300 hectares - à Ehden plus de 5,600 ou à Bcharre plus de 3,005. Entourée de chercheurs, professeurs, étudiants, l’ONG travaille de manière méthodologique et scientifique à l’égard de l’éco-système de ses sites de plantations dispersés du nord et au sud.  Spécialisé dans la génétique du cèdre, l’équipe scientifique tente de nouvelles expériences pour aboutir à de nouvelles découvertes dans le domaine. La forêt des Cèdres de Dieu contient environ 375 arbres centenaire dont deux seraient âgés de plus de trois mille ans et dix de plus de mille ans.
